It was a murder….. , Days after a pregnant elephant was killed allegedly by someone who fe
d the animal a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers, Kerala’s top wildlife official has broken hi
s silence and issued clarity in this regard. The animal’s death has sparked
a furor across the country.
Chief Wildlife Warden, Kerala, IFS officer Surendra Kumar said it is difficult to believe the claim that the elephant was deliberately fed. It is a wild elephant and no sane person would have gone ne
ar that elephant to feed it, Surendra Kumar said.
The state’s top wildlife official, Kumar also clarified that the elephant died in Palakkad district and not Mallapuram as mentioned in earlier reports. Locals first spotted the elephant on May 23 after which it went back to the forest and returned on May 25, Surendra Kumar said. He further added that the elephant stood in the river for a whole day and died on May 27.
A case was registered in this regard on May 28 itself.
